The final piece of our plan was to go down the river, come out into the Moray Firth and paddle a couple of miles up Beauly Firth to the final night’s camp site. This went well until we came out into the Firth where it was apparent that a strong westerly wind was whipping up large waves against which it was very difficult to make any progress. With the tide turning against us which would make make matters worse, it was decided to abandon the trip at a convenient jetty and transport the gear and canoes to the camp site on our cars which we retrieved after summoning the local taxi company to transport the drivers to them. Although 2 miles short of the intended finish, we finally all arrived at the camp site with our gear and ourselves intact and I think we all felt a tremendous sense of achievement at having canoed across Scotland from west to east.
