Introduction to our Norfolk Canoe Trip.

Moorhen Postcard

The trips are completely organised by David and Christine Batley who are based at the Moorhen Bed and Breakfast at Horning on the River Bure. Accommodation is provided on a bed and breakfast basis for each night of the trip but we decided to stay at the Moorhen for an extra day before and after the trip so that we could have an even more relaxing break.

The canoe equipment and transport to the start point is provided by Mark Wilkinson – “The Canoe Man” http://www.thecanoeman.co.uk/ who picks up from the Moorhen during the morning of the first day.

This trip is ideal for beginners who want an introduction to open boating or for more experienced canoeists who want to indulge in some luxury without the need to pack boats or carry camping gear. As wild camping is not allowed on the main Broads, finding camp sites is very difficult and there are few licensed sites adjacent to the river.

The route is very straightforward and maps are provided, there are no rapids or tricky bits of water and the distances are easily managed. It is, however, important to observe the navigational “river right” rule and keep a good lookout because at busy periods there are many hire cruisers below Coltishall and it is best to keep out of their way!

The first day’s paddle is above the navigational limit so the river is virtually deserted, with plenty of opportunities for observing the wildlife and this is certainly a section to savour. The only time a portage is needed is on nearing Coltishall adjacent to the ruins of Horstead Mill where a canal section by-passes the mill race; canoes need to be carried along a short path to the head of the canal. We were looked after very well by everyone and I would thoroughly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to enjoy the beauty, peace and tranquillity of the Broads.
