Another beautiful day! Awoke and sorted out breakfast, packed lunch, etc and left at abut 10.30am to paddle to Horning. The river was much less busy than Sunday so was peaceful again which makes for easier navigation.
We passed Wroxham Broad and kept to the river side of the dividing island and continued downriver to Great Hoveton Broad Nature Reserve trail where we hauled out our canoe at the landing point. Saw the ice cream boat and couldn’t resist an ice cream before starting out. We then walked along a boardwalk laid out through the woods until we reached a hide that looked out over the broad. Saw Terns nesting and feeding young with small fish. Also saw a Sedge Warbler, Tree Creeper, Brimstone butterfly, damsel and demoiselle flies. We were pleased to meet the very knowledgeable warden who explained more about the wildlife at the reserve.
After this we paddled around the corner and into Salhouse Broad, which is not so big but has a very nice beach to land on together with a picnic area but a charge of £1-50 for landing!
The land became more open with few trees and more reeds so the wind started to pick up as we left the broad. The headwind made paddling harder and we didn’t venture into Little Hoveton Broad.
On arrival at Horning, we unloaded our gear and left the canoe to be picked up later by Mark. We walked back the Moorhen and were greeted with a refreshing cup of tea, kindly brewed by Christine, and served in the garden. We ended our trip with another very comfortable night at Moorhen.
